DLA Piper was formed in 2005 after the merger of the UK's DLA LLP (former Dibb Lupton Alsop), San Diego-based Gray Cary Ware & Friedenreich, and Baltimore-based Piper Rudnick LLP.

The German offices are managed and led by managing partner Dr. Konrad Rohde and Dr. Benjamin Parameswaran. Since the opening of the Cologne office in September 2004, the firm recorded a steady growth. In November 2004, a presence in Hamburg opened, followed by a location in Frankfurt in October 2005. Since August 2007, DLA Piper has an office in Munich.
